NEWS LETTER 2023
The ASCE India Section Southern Region 2024 Newsletter will highlight key developments in civil engineering, focusing on innovations, technical advancements, and regional projects. It will showcase member achievements, upcoming events, and professional development opportunities such as workshops and certifications. The newsletter will also feature student involvement, community outreach, and collaborations with local institutions and industry leaders. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, smart infrastructure, and disaster-resilient engineering, the newsletter aims to strengthen ASCE’s presence, foster networking, and promote the growth of civil engineers across Southern India, while supporting the continuous development of professionals and students.

ASCE DAY 2023
November
This event commemorates the founding of the American Society of Civil Engineers on November 5, 1852, by twelve engineers at New York City's Croton Aqueduct. This year, we celebrate ASCE's 171st anniversary. The ASCE SRM Student Chapter, in collaboration with the ASCE India Section Southern Region, planted 171 saplings at Ninnakarai in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, with the presence of Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Dr. S. Pradeep, and other students and faculty members.

STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS EXPO
November
This event commemorates the Society's founding on November 5, 1852, as we celebrate ASCE's 171st anniversary, highlighting our legacy in civil engineering. The ASCE SRM Student Chapter at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, in collaboration with ASCE India Section Southern Region, hosted a Structural Dynamics Expo for ASCE Day at the Civil Engineering Department, with Dr. S. Pradeep and B.Tech and M.Tech students in attendance. A total of 36 students across seven groups showcased their models at the expo.

Two days workshop on Industrial Safety and Construction Management

The ASCE SRM Student Chapter, Department of Civil Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur in association with SEED for Safety, American Society of Civil Engineer India Section Southern Region conducted "Two days workshop on Industrial Safety and Construction Management (ISCoM 2023)"- 06.10.2023 & 07.10.2023. This event promises to be an enriching and insightful hands on experience.

Massive Palm Seed Collection 2023
September
On September 9, 2023, SRM Institute of Science and Technology and UBA SRMIST 2.0, in with ASCE SRM Student Chapter, held a successful Palm Seed Collection Programme. This initiative aimed to promote environmental conservation and raise awareness about preserving indigenous Palm tree species. A total of 75 participants, including SRMIST faculty, students, and community members, actively contributed to important cause.

Application of Cold-Formed Steel in the Construction Industry

The event featured Dr. Krishanu Roy, a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering at the University of Waikato, who discussed innovative applications of cold-formed steel in construction. Attendees from India and worldwide participated, with Dr. Kishor Pankan delivering the Vote of Thanks. Discover how cold-formed steel is transforming with its efficiency, sustainability, and versatility.


School Project Expo
August
The School Project Expo 2023 conducted by SRM Institute of Science and Technology in association with MTS India Section, ASCE India Section Southern Region, MTS SRM Student Chapter and ASCE SRM Student Chapter was a showcase of innovative and creative projects developed by 6th grade to 12th grade school students from various parts of Tamil Nadu. Held on 04.08.2023 at Faraday Hall, ESB Block, Main Campus, SRMIST, Kattankulathur, the expo aimed to provide a platform for students to demonstrate their skills, knowledge, and achievements in various fields.

MTS TECHSURGE 2023, themed "ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR THE OCEAN," is organized by ASCE IS SR and MTS India Section, along with ASCE SRM Student Chapter and Iamp; Norinco India Pvt Ltd, on February 4, 2023, at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tamilnadu. The event has 210 participants and 110 poster presentations. It began with an introductory speech by. R. Venkatesan, Founder Chairman of MTS India Section, and was inaugurated by Ms. Zdenka Willis, immediate Past President of the Marine Technology Society.

World Environment Day
June
A webinar organized by ASCE India Section and M India Section on June 5, 2023, ahead of World Environmental Day, attracted 161 registr, including 60 active participants. Experts discussed plastic waste mismanagement, sharing data from European and Asia-Pacific manufacturers. They revealed that only 9% of plastic waste is recycled and 22% is mismanaged. The sessions were interactive, allowing participants to clarify their doubts with the speakers.

FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS AND MOCK DRILL

On behalf of ASCE IS SR, ASCE SRM Student chapter and UBA SRMIST Fire Safety awareness and Mock drill was conducted on 28.04.2023 for 65 numbers of PG students belongs to various branches of CSE and Bio Tech.
